SIOF 2005, the 5th China (Shanghai) International Optics Fair, had been held at the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Centre on February 24-26, 2005. It was organized by the China Optometric & Optical Association (COOA) and the China Light Industrial Corporation for Foreign Economic & Technical Cooperation (CLETC), co-organized by Orient International Exhibition Co., Ltd. of Hong Kong. The fair was supported by the China National Light Industry Council and sponsored by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. As the SIOF is endorsed by the Ministry of Commerce of the Central Government, the show name is crowned with the title “China”, indicating that it is a “national” event. SIOF is also endorsed by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government Foreign Economic Relations & Trade Commission, the authority of the host area. Shanghai Optometric & Optical Association is also invited as a sponsor of our fair. All these measures are to assure comprehensive support of the country.
 
SIOF is the largest international optical exhibition in Asia in terms of exhibition area, number of exhibitors and product brands. The SIOF expanded from last year’s exhibition area of 31,000 m2 to 35,000 m2 this year. There were 657 exhibitors, including principals and agents, from 19 countries and regions. 318 international brands were on display this time, comprise all ranges of optical products and equipment were on display. And the fair attracted 40,000 times of visitors from 65 countries and regions.
 
Our show is supported by more and more international associates. There are 3 overseas participation groups from Italy, Japan and France. This year saw the debut participation of Italian group of 14 companies, jointly organized by the Italian Optical Manufacturers Association (ANFAO) and Associazione Industriali Belluno, showing the latest Italian brand frames, sunglasses, kids eyewear and spectacle cases made of precious and new materials. To show their emphasis on China market, they also hosted a catwalk during the exhibition period to show the masterpieces of Italian frames. Fukui Optical Association of Japan organized the Japan pavilion and SILMO Exhibition of France continued to bring a group of leading French companies to join the SIOF.
 
Many V.I.P.s visited our fair, including officials from various Government Departments and Consulate Generals, chairmen and delegates of global optical associations. There were visiting groups led by the chairmen of the Korea Optical Association, the Thai Optical Association and the Malaysian Optical Wholesalers Association. Leading magazines like VEDERE INTERNAIONAL of Italy, MANUFACTURERS FORUM of Germany, OPTICAL WORLD of the U.K., OPTICAL BUSINESS of Korea, and exhibitions of our counterparts such as MIDO of Italy, SILMO of France, HKOF of Hong Kong SAR of China, IOFT of Japan all are present here to promote themselves to the Chinese and overseas buyers attending the exhibition. No doubt that China (Shanghai) International Optics Fair is recognized as among the top of international optical exhibitions!
 
The optical industry of China is growing systematically and fast. According to unofficial statistics, the total value of Chinese optical products was US$ 1.93 billion in 2004. As from the statistics of the Chinese Customs of 2004, optical goods amounted US$ 915 million were exported, an increase of 18.02%, and US$ 111 million optical goods were imported, 35.73% more than that of the year before.
 
In order to protect the intellectual property rights of the exhibitors, the organizers set up an intellectual property rights consultation office with lawyers stationed there to settle any such disputes arise during exhibition.
 
The show has brought excellent result to exhibitors. International exhibitors not only receive orders from Chinese buyers but also from buyers of other countries, affirming the “international” level of the SIOF. According to on-site surveys, 80% of the exhibitors will join again next year!
