Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) announced today that Vision Source, the premier network of independent doctors of optometry in the U.S., will partner with OGS to raise funds from all its practices to support the elimination of one of the major causes of blindness and low vision globally – uncorrected refractive error -- for those in need around the world.
As a National Platinum Sponsor, Vision Source has committed to encouraging its 2,700 optometrists and a similar number of support staff in its 1400practices throughout the U.S. to support OGS with annual contributions and to carry OGS’ message to the millions of people who seek vision care at Vision Source practices.
Current estimates are that 250 million people worldwide are functionally blind or visually impaired due simply to the lack of an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Working with an alliance of optometrists and organizations that coordinate vision care projects around the world, OGS funds the development of sustainable infrastructure via eye clinics, routine eye examinations, distribution of spectacles, training programs and clinical equipment.
“With Optometry practices in all 50 states, Vision Source’s support will be a fantastic start for our fundraising efforts in the U.S.,” said Pamela Capaldi, Director of Operations for OGS in the U.S. “Vision Source’s practices see millions of patients each year and if every Vision Source practice promoted OGS, we could give sight to millions in need. Having a partner with such a broad reach in a country as large as the U.S. is very exciting.”
Optometry Giving Sight is unique in that it is the only global fundraising initiative specifically targeting the prevention of blindness due to refractive error. It aims to bring together all people who are familiar with the value of eye examinations and the correction of sight defects and who have the knowledge and determination to deliver a solution.
“Providing quality eye care is the foundation of our business,” said Glenn Ellisor, Vision Source’s President and CEO. “We are pleased to partner with Optometry Giving Sight in such a worthwhile endeavour as ensuring vision and eyecare to those in need in all parts of the world. Our practices have agreed to make this initiative the main focus of our charitable efforts. As the largest network of independent optometrists in the U.S., we believe our practices – and our patients – can make a real difference to alleviating poverty by helping give sight to the world.”
Commenting after presenting at the Vision Source Annual Meeting in Acapulco, Professor Holden, Chair of OGS globally said “It wasn’t just that the executives and doctors from Vision Source were extremely supportive, it was the willingness of everybody to consider making OGS part of the Vision Source culture. These U.S. professionals are the largest alliance of independent optometrists in the world; their endorsement is a huge step forward for OGS”.
About Optometry Giving Sight
Sight is our most treasured sense. We use our eyes to see the world. We learn with them. We communicate with them. We see our loved ones with them.
They mirror our grief, our laughter, our joy. They are the window into the world of family, knowledge and work.
Sight can make the difference between a life of poverty and a life of opportunity.
250 million people are blind or visually impaired simply because they cannot obtain the glasses they need. Optometry Giving Sight funds the solution: an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Through sustainable primary eyecare programs, we give sight and hope to millions in need.
Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) is a global fundraising campaign in support of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight through mobilization of funds directed towards elimination of uncorrected refractive error and helping those with permanent low vision. OGS was formed by the World Optometry Foundation, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the International Centre for Eyecare Education.
