According to data  just released by Health Products Research, silicone hydrogel lenses accounted for 29 percent of new fits of soft lenses in the United States during the first quarter 2005, compared to 17 percent a year ago, indicative of the massive shift underway in practitioners’ dispensing habits.
Health Product Research audits eye care professional dispensing of contact lenses, based on  a national representative sample of independent and chain locations. The latest data shows that new fits of both two-week and continuous wear silicone hydrogel lenses grew rapidly during the first quarter.
Also according to the data, CIBA Vision's O2OPTIX™ brand, introduced in September 2004, was a major contributor to silicone hydrogel category growth, accounting for 8.5 percent of all soft lens new fits during the quarter. Most new wearers of O2OPTIX had been upgraded from two-week HEMA disposable type lenses.
"This data provides further confirmation of the groundswell in practitioner acceptance of silicone hydrogel lenses," said Karen Gough, president of the Americas for CIBA Vision. "New fits are the best leading indicator of the direction of the contact lens market, and these results point to dominance of silicone hydrogel materials within a few years. CIBA Vision will continue to lead the way in this market revolution."
