Visitor attendance up 9 %
Italians lead with an 18 % increase

The record-setting 37th Mido closed its doors with the balance sheet in the black.  In fact, the leading International Exhibition of Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology, which took place in Milan from May 4-7 in the new Milan Fair Complex at Rho-Pero, boasted an outstanding 15% increase in net allocated exhibition space, compared to 2006 figures (53,000 net sq m. vs. approx. 46,000 for the previous year, without taking into account the 1,000 meters of additional space occupied by the Press Village and by the stands allocated to organizations, associations and fairs.  Attendance topped out at nearly 46,000 visitors, for an approx. 9% rise in growth over 2006. All of which attests to the outstanding success attributed to this Mido by exhibitors and the visiting public, confirming that the proactive implementation of change was widely appreciated.

One of the show's winning assets was its undeniably strong magnetism for visitors, both Italian (+17.9%) and foreign (+3.5%), over last year's exhibition. While attendance figures for domestic visitors in the past have been fairly consistent, and at times, have even diminished, never have they shown such a sharp increase as this year. Mido's ongoing appeal for foreign visitors, continually on the rise, was apparent in the number of foreign visitors over the duration of the four-day event -- 27,246, or 60% of the total.

Day-by-day figures, and the share of Italian vs. foreign visitors turned out to be quite intriguing: while Sunday May 6th, the day with the highest number of visitors (13,981 participants, equivalent to 34.9% of overall visitors), also coincided with the highest percentage of Italian visitors (51.9%), strangely enough, the influx of foreign visitors was concentrated on the first day of the show, Friday May 4th, accounting for 73.1% of the total. These figures are even more fascinating when you factor in the series of unfavorable events -- a public transportation strike and a violent cloudburst, on the heels of an Alitalia strike on Thursday May 3rd -- that made Friday May 4th a less than stellar day in Milan.

All in all, the crowds of participants and the considerable increase in their numbers, compared to last year's event, once again proved the leadership role the Milan exhibition exerts and dispelled forever any doubts about Mido's new formula for success and the move to its new location.

Mido's international appeal is also evident in the percentage of foreign exhibitors, which grew from 69% in 2006 to 72% this year. The number of countries represented increased 13% over 2006 figures, to a total of 43 in 2007.

During the days of the fair, an air of satisfaction flowed through the hallways and in Corso Italia, amid the stands and the pavilions, among exhibitors and visitors, buyers and members of the international press, over this first appointment with the  “New Mido” – the truly global marketplace for the eyewear industry.

“We are extremely satisfied with the results - stated Cirillo Marcolin, President of Mido.
Mido 2007, the New Mido, is the outcome of years of work toward this end, and I'm thrilled that my term concludes with this year's event.  Even before Mido 2006 closed its doors, we had finalized our commitment to change. We have worked endlessly to live up to our claims so that the New Mido -- the extravaganza that went on stage this May 4th - 7th -- could become a reality. This New Mido, which I confidently deliver into the hands of my successor, is a project that has arrived at its destination, but I have no doubt that it is also a point of departure, the turning point for a Show that had to reinvent itself in order to rise to the challenges imposed by the market of the 21st Century.“

Mark your calendars then for the next appointment, which you won't want to miss, with the New Mido 2008 -- May 9th through 12th  -- at the Milan Fair Complex in Rho-Pero.
