Over £4,000 was raised at the BCLA (British Contact Lens Association) gala dinner held this month.  Professor Brien Holden, Chairman of Optometry Giving Sight (OGS) Globally, presented a very moving film showing the dramatic impact of correcting vision in people in need in Africa, Timor and especially in the Tsunami devastated areas in Sri Lanka, where millions of people have either lost, never had or never will have vision correction.

The presentation highlighted not only the impact of Optometry Giving Sight funding the delivery of eyecare services and spectacles but also the training programs, the development of eye clinics and delivery of affordable technology – key activities needed to develop sustainable services in refractive error and low vision programmes in countries and communities in need.

“All those working in the optical professions know what a difference correction of refractive errors makes to the life of an individual.  In developed countries we take this privilege for granted.  Over two hundred million of people in Africa, Asia, the Western Pacific and Latin America never have that chance - they are functionally blind or visually impaired through a lack of an eye examination and a pair of glasses.  It is our responsibility in the industry and the professions to eliminate this most simple and tragically wasteful form of vision loss, by giving support that will help those in need,” said Prof. Holden.

OGS signed up the first optometrists, dispensing opticians and industry people, who committed the £20 monthly that OGS has targeted to sustain the Vision 2020 programs in refractive error and low vision delivered by the OGS collaborating partners from the World Council of Optometry, the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness and the International Centre for Eyecare and Education (ICEE).  A bottle of vintage champagne was generously donated by Bausch & Lomb to each of the newly signed-up members.  A pack containing a range of in-store materials including leaflets for patients, a certificate, window sticker, posters and much more will be sent to each for further fundraising from patients and staff.

Gemma Ortiz Genovese, European Programme Manager said, “We hope that all optometrists and opticians in the UK will tick yes to OGS and support this global fundraising initiative in delivering long-term, sustainable projects and programs in correcting refractive errors and aiding those with low vision.”

“We can help give every child, woman and man around the world the opportunity to have the right to sight through a simple eye examination and a pair of spectacles.  Join OGS today,” she urged. Gemma added “OGS cooperates with all the agencies giving sight to those with uncorrected refractive error, because together we can solve this problem.”
